Introduction

Here are some library and online resources to kick-start your research for the upcoming class debate.

Motion: “This house believes that childbirth should be considered a form of national service.”

Some things to note about this guide:

The library and online resources are grouped by type: books and book chapters, journal articles and papers, and newspaper articles and other online resources.

To search for books, book chapters and journal articles, you can use FindMore@NUSL or LINC. FindMore searches everything found in the NUS Libraries' catalogue plus online full-text content available from the Libraries' subscribed electronic resources while LINC only searches the NUS Libraries' catalogue. You can start your search using the keywords listed in the Search Terms box.

The recommended books are available at the Central Library. Please click on the title of the book to access the catalogue record and check its availability. Most of these books are part of the Central Library's Singapore/Malaysia Collection and may only be consulted within the library. This collection is housed at Level 5 of the Central Library. Directions to the Central Library can be found here.

To search for newspaper articles, you can use NewspaperSG (digitised Singapore newspapers from 1831 to 2009; full-text articles up to 1989 for The Straits Times) and Factiva (local, regional and international newspapers; you'll be required to log in with your NUS student ID).

For tips on starting your research, please refer to the Start Your Research guide on the Yale-NUS College Library website or the Library Instruction Page.
