Dhārāvi: a slum city that says I can
Call Number: CMR3868
Publication Date: 2008
There is nothing subtle about Dharavi. The sight, smell and sound coming out of Asia’s biggest slum are in your face. So are the numbers. The 530-acre land produces 200,000 wallets, hand bags and briefcases every year. There are 1000 garment-making workshops employing 40,000 people and the 1000 pottery units have an annual turnover of around 4 million USD. Dharavi is also nothing if not enterprising: entrepreneurship sprouts on the roadside and developing inside tin sheds that can barely hold three grown-ups. Money is made if there is an opportunity to make it and openings are created and expanded. And each section has a guru, an individual who arrived here with dreams in his eyes and then shaped a world out of those dreams.

By the end of 1997, South Korea was on the brink of default requiring the largest bailout in the history of the IMF and the World Bank. How did South Korea go from boom to bust in a decade? How does its tripartite relationship between government, chaebols and labour unions affect the unfolding of the crisis? And how did its people muster the Korean spirit of “uri-ism” (togetherness) to ride out the crisis?

Singapore-Malaysia: the lion and the tiger
Call Number: CMR799
Publication Date: 2006
The Johore Strait separates the highly prosperous city-state of Singapore from the rapidly developing economic "tiger" of Malaysia. As the film illustrates, they are nevertheless extremely interdependent. Johore Barhu, the second largest city in Malaysia, changed radically at the beginning of the 1980's when its growth was stimulated by Singapore's expansion. Thousands of Malaysians streamed in from the provinces to work in Johore Barhu. About 25,000 Malaysian workers cross the border to work in Singapore every day. Prof. Kesavapany, University of Singapore, discusses the history of the two formerly British territories and the economic "miracle" of Singapore. Nowadays, many Singaporians come to Johore to have a wild night out or to go shopping in Malaysia where things cost less. Malaysia has made the decision to compete with Singapore and has built a new container port in Johore. In spite of the tensions and temptations to compete with each other, a second border bridge between the two states was inaugurated in 1999, freeing up traffic and encouraging exchange between the two countries.

A yen for a dollar
Call Number: HDV90
Publication Date: 2000
A Yen for A Dollar explores how the different cultures of Asia have shaped the way their nationals do business today, and how they relate to other parts of Asia and the West. This is not a "how to do business in Asia". Rather, Yen for a Dollar uses business as the prism through which we view Asia. The focus of this series is people. Over four episodes, the program joins a dozen very different Asians in India, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore -- their backgrounds, activities, work, pleasure, culture, relationships and religion.
