The Biodiversity Library of Southeast Asia (BLSEA) contains rare and unique content on the flora and fauna of Southeast Asia. A labour of love between NUS Libraries and Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, it contains open access biodiversity materials from both entities.

The Programme is carried out by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, Indonesia, in cooperation with the Centre for the Study of Manuscripts Culture (CSMC), University of Hamburg, Germany. The Programme is supported by Arcadia, a philanthropic institution based in London, England. The programme lasts for up till five years (2017-2022) and takes place throughout the year on a full-time basis.

This collection contains a wide range of materials documenting western interaction with China from the first embassy by Lord Macartney to trade negotiations for military aircraft in the 1970s. It includes papers regarding the Macartney and Amherst Embassies, the Opium War, Arrow War, Boxer Rebellion, Taiping Rebellion, the opening of treaty ports, the creation and running of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service and the birth of the People's Republic, and strong collections relating to missionaries and their experiences. It contains maps, drawings and photographs, and personal accounts of life and work in China throughout the period.

China and the Modern World is made up of 3 smaller databases. The first, Diplomacy and Political Secrets (1869-1950) comprises a compilation of 4,204 rare China-related historical documents. The second, Missionary, Sinology, and Literary Periodicals (1817-1949) is a collection of 17 English-language periodicals published in or about China during a period of over 130 years, extending from 1817 until the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The third, Maritime Customs Service of China (1854-1949) provides an excellent primary source collection for the study of China and its relations with the West in the late Qing and Republican periods.

Produced mostly by the Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio of China, documentary films and newsreels were two of the major mass media and communication channels in China from the 1950s through the 1970s. They covered all aspects of social activities, though the emphasis was on developments and achievements in the building of a socialist country. In order to reach even broader public audiences, government agents produced and printed the transcripts and shot lists for the films and sent them to cities and rural areas. The bulk of the items in the collection are transcripts for the documentary films and newsreels from the Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976

A free online resource containing nearly 1,500 declassified documents on the international relations of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since 1949. Documents in the database include diplomatic cables, high level correspondence, meeting minutes, and other internal documents retrieved from dozens of archives around the world.

The Customs’ Gazette, published by order of the Inspector General of Customs of China in Shanghai, provided quarterly reports on trade that were prepared and submitted by various custom houses based across the country. This statistical and narrative information provided the central Chinese government with an in-depth analysis on trade. But, the Gazette also provided insights into local and regional economic and social conditions, policing of customs and trade, and conditions at Treaty Ports.

Xinhua, or New China News Agency, has, with more than 170 foreign and 31 domestic bureaus, a broad reach in China and around the world. As the official organ of China’s Communist Party these reports offer a view of the country’s perspective on international issues and events and provide insight on the role of Communist mass media in Chinese culture, the Cold War, and 20th-century world history. Xinhua helped drive support for China’s economic reforms and helped propagate the “war of words” between the United States and China.

The Korean and Vietnam wars were two of the defining events of the 20th century. While the origins of both are rooted in their countries’ respective histories, much of the world regarded the wars as proxies for the larger Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. This collection offers a global perspective on two of the 20th century’s most crucial turning points.

For America’s allies, the nation’s racial tensions were a cause of concern. For adversaries, they were an indication of American weakness. International coverage of American race relations therefore adds a new dimension to what may seem to be a familiar story. Since 2000, CIA has installed and maintained an electronic full-text searchable system named CREST (the CIA Records Search Tool), at NARA II in College Park, Maryland. The CREST system is the publicly accessible repository of the subset of CIA records reviewed under the 25-year program in electronic format (manually reviewed and released records are accessioned directly into the National Archives in their original format). Over 11 million pages have been released in electronic format and reside on the CREST database, from which researchers have printed about 1.1 million pages.

Pravda ("Truth") was the official voice of Soviet communism and the Central Committee of the Communist Party between 1918 and 1991. Founded in 1912 in St. Petersburg, Pravda originated as an underground daily workers’ newspaper, and it soon became the main newspaper of the revolutionary wing of the Russian socialist movement. Throughout the Soviet era, party members were obligated to read Pravda. Today, Pravda still remains the official organ of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, an important political faction in contemporary Russian politics.

For decades the official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Pravda, was widely read both within the Soviet states and by foreign diplomats, politicians, and intelligence agencies. Pravda has long been considered a bellwether of Soviet thought. This database includes both the perspective of the Communist Party during the Soviet era and that of Russia’s conservative-nationalist opposition in articles published after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

These microfilm films provide a snapshot of Australian defence interest in Southeast Asia, most notably Singapore and Malaya from the late 1930s till the 1960s.

This database contains news reports about apartheid from South Africa and from around the world. The reports include transcripts of radio and television broadcasts as well as articles from newspapers. The reports were chosen by a U.S. government agency called the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)--which became part of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1947--to be disseminated among government officials and decision-makers. The reports were selected for their informational value to keep policy-makers informed of global concerns. When necessary, the reports were translated into English. No U.S. papers or broadcasts are included in this database.

This remarkable collection demonstrates the impact of the holy book of Islam in Europe. Long before printing with movable type became common practice in the Islamic world, Korans had been printed in Arabic type in several European cities. The collection includes Korans and Koran translations, printed between 1537 and 1857, and is of interest to book historians, theologians, philologists, and scholars of Islamic Studies alike.

Leiden University Library has a world famous collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts. Its core collection is brought together by, among others, the Leiden Orientalists Joseph Justus Scaliger and Jacobus Golius. Included in the Scaliger collection are about a dozen manuscripts which belonged to Franciscus Raphelengius. These collections consist of extremely rare, sometimes unique, manuscripts.

This online publication consists of 140 volumes from the Warner Collection, totaling 45,809 pages of Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, and Persian texts. All these manuscripts were acquired by the great scholar Levinus Warner during his stay in Istanbul from 1644 until his death in 1665.

This collection consists of 200 manuscripts with just over 300 works. In addition to 5 autographs, the highlights of the collection include: the earliest dated manuscript in the collection (Arab O. 013) a dated copy of a unique arrangement of a rare treatise written by al-Ṣāḥib Tāǧ al-Dīn (d. 707/1307) produced in the year of the author’s death; two rare Mamluk treatises on horsemanship (Arab F.2); and an anonymous compilation (Arab O. 027) about the lives of the outstanding men who lived in Medina in the 12th/18th century.

This source edition of Gessner’s private library contains those seventy eight books that Gessner read most carefully and annotated by hand. The majority have been reproduced from the rich holdings of the Zentralbibliothek Zürich, while other important copies included in this edition are held by the University Library of Basle. Since the 1980s, scholars have been vigorously debating the relationship between the late nineteenth-century progressive movements (women's rights, labor rights, etc.) and evangelicalism. Some continue to see the evangelical revivals as delaying genuinely emancipatory reform movements (Gilbert). Others maintain that middle-class and working-class agency, and especially female agency, were direct outgrowths of the evangelical break with the traditions of the established church.
