How to locate materials in Central Library, Law Library, Medical Library and Science Library, etc.? What do the different location codes CL RBR, MD SMC, LW RBR, etc. mean? Is the item currently available or out on loan (item status)?

Location codes in the catalogue

You searched the catalogue and found that the required item is available in NUS Libraries. To find out where the item is kept, note the location code which is displayed along with the status and call number as shown below.

If you are using FindMore@NUSL, click on the item to view full details in LINC.

In classic catalogue LINC:

Location code: two components

The location code assigned to an item is essentially made up of two components namely:

  • library (CL)
  • collection (Books)

In the above example, the required book is therefore kept in the Central Library Books collection (also commonly known as "open shelves").  Materials kept in this location can be borrowed out for a period of 14 days for undergraduates, 28 days for staff and graduate students, etc. Refer to our help page on Loan entitlement of Library members for details on loan periods for different membership categories as well as material formats .

Note that the call number for the above book is "HC497.12 Dyn 2011" and that its current status is "Due 20-05-11...."  This means that  the book is currently out on loan and is due to be returned to the Library on 20 May 2011. The phrase "... +1 HOLD" simply means that one reservation or hold has been placed on the book.

There is also one copy in the CL Singapore-Malaysia Collection, that has a status USE IN LIBRARY.
