EndNote: Installation

EndNote (EN) is a software for managing references. It can automate the many tedious steps involved in organizing and formatting the references and bibliographies in your academic writing. EndNote Web (ENW) is the web version of EN, with fewer features.

Installing EndNote

For NUS Staff who are using NUS-owned computers/laptops you can install EndNote using the Software Centre that has already been pre-installed on your computers.

Before using the Software Centre to install EndNote, please ensure that:

  1. Your computer has to be part of the NUS windows domain.
  2. During Windows login prompt, log in using your NUSNET ID.
  3. If you are off-campus, please connect using NUS nVPN.

If your NUS-owned computer/laptop does not have Software Centre installed, you can install it by following the instructions listed here.

Installing EndNote using Software Centre:

  1. Open up Software Centre in your computer
  2. Search for and click on the EndNote X9 or Endnote 20 Icon
  3. Follow the instructions to install EndNote on your computer.
  4. When the installation is complete, this toolbar should appear in your Microsoft Word as a tab:

For Staff using their own PC/Laptops or if their device does not have Software Centre:

  1. Make sure you are connected onto the NUS network or you are using the NUS VPN if you are not on campus
  2. Head to this NUS IT webpage, select the correct version of EndNote to be installed on your device.

Alternatively, you can bring your device to NUS IT to install EndNote on your device.

EndNote software is available to NUS staff and students free of charge for both Windows and Mac users. Endnote should be removed (un-installed) when the user is no longer a staff or student of NUS. Instructions are as follows:

Before you begin:

  • Ensure that your computer is connected to NUS computer network and you have administrator rights to the PC or laptop.

For PC users, you may be installing EndNote in campus or off campus.

In campus: 

  1. Login to NUSNET on campus (for laptops: login to the campus wireless network "NUS")
     
  2. Go to this NUS IT Software webpage
     
  3. Select the correct version of EndNote to install


     
  4. When the installation is complete, this toolbar should appear in Microsoft Word 2016/2019 as a tab:

 

 

Off campus:

  1. If you are off-campus, please connect using NUS nVPN.
  2. Follow steps 1 to 4 in the above section for “In Campus” installation.

  1. Backup all your Endnote Libraries in a separate hard disk before you proceed with installation. If you have any customised output styles (files with .ens extension), you'll need to back them up too.
     
  2.  Next ensure that you are connected to the NUS Network or you are using NUS VPN if you are outside of campus
     
  3. Head to this NUS IT webpage and select the Mac Version of EndNote to download and install

Set Up 'Cite While Your Write' function

Once you complete the EN installation, double-click on the Endnote icon to open the application. You can choose to create a brand new library, or open an existing one if you are upgrading from an earlier version.

If you are installing Endnote for the very first time on your Mac, you need to open a blank MS Word document and locate the Endnote tool menu from "Tools". Alternatively, choose to have the Endnote toolbar shown in Word menu: go to View > Toolbars >Endnote

If you have a MacBook Pro with the silicon chip (M1), you need to enable Rosetta to grant permissions for both applications (EN20 and MSWord) to integrate. See here

 

 

EndNote tab in MS Word

If you are unable to see the EndNote tab in your MS Word, please check the MS Word Option. Go to the Add-ins. In the Active Add-ins, check the box next to Endnote 'Cite While You Write'. If it is not in the Active Add-ins, follow the steps below to move the CWYW feature from Inactive to Active.
