Standards: Standards Organisations

This subject guide gives an introduction about Standards and covers major sets of standards available at NUS Libraries: Singapore Standards, British Standards, IEC Standards, IEEE Standards and ASTM standards.

Types of Standards

Standards may be developed by:

  • standard organizations/bodies operating at national, regional or international level
  • professional bodies/societies like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) etc. 

Standards Organisations/Bodies

Some examples:

​​​​​​Enterprise Singapore 

  • formed from a merger between former SPRING Singapore + IE Singapore
  • oversees the development of Singapore Standards (SS) through its industry-led Singapore Standards Council (SSC)

British Standards Institution

  • national standards body for UK
  • produces British Standards

American National Standards Institute

  • national standards body for US
  • produces American National Standards
  • to find American National Standards, try ASTM Compass, IEEE Xplore^, LINC

European Committee for Standardization (French name: Comite Europeen de Normalisation (CEN))

  • produces European Standards
