Biography

Isang Yun studied in Japan and Korea and worked as teacher and lecturer at the University of Seoul. He studied composition in Paris in 1956 before settling in Germany. He had a compositional breakthrough with the premiere of orchestral work Réak at the 1966 Donaueschingen Festival. He was kidnapped in 1967 by the South Korean Secret Service and, while in prison, composed opera Butterfly Widow. After his release and return to Germany in 1969, he composed and taught in Hanover and Berlin. In the last 20 years of his life, he concentrated on the concerto form and composed five symphonies.
