EndNote (EN) is a software for automating the many repetitive steps involved in organizing and formatting the references and bibliography in your academic writing. EndNote Online is the web version of EN, with fewer features.

The EndNote software is available only to NUS staff and students for both Windows and Mac users. Endnote should be removed (un-installed) when the user is no longer a staff or student of NUS.

Here is the step-by-step instructions:

Before you begin:

  • Ensure that your computer is connected to NUS computer network and you have administrator rights to the PC or laptop.

On campus:

  1. Login to NUSNET on campus (for laptops: login to the campus wireless network "NUS")
  2. Go to
  3. Click on text "nTouch", and once there, use the search box to find Endnote
  4. Ensure ALL MS Office Applications are closed.

When the installation is complete, this toolbar should appear in MS Word ribbon:

Off campus:

  1. If you are off-campus, please connect using NUS nVPN.
  2. Follow steps 1 to 4 in the above section for “In Campus” installation.

  2.  Next ensure that you are connected to the NUS Network or you are using NUS VPN if you are off campus
  3. Close all Microsoft Applications
  4. Go to "nTouch", and when there, use the top search box and put in Endnote. Click on the article that contains the download/installation files

If you have a MacBook Pro with the silicon chip (M1), you need to enable Rosetta to grant permissions for both applications (EN20 and MSWord) to integrate. See here

EndNote tab in MS Word

If you are unable to see the EndNote tab in the MS Word Ribbon, please ensure that you have downloaded the MSWord application onto your laptop/desktop. You cannot use MS Word 365 (web version) with Endnote software.

Mac users may not have the "MSWord 2016 bundle" after installation of Endnote due to a bug in the installation setup.

To correct this, please open Endnote21:

1. Go to the Endnote21 menu, choose 'Customizer'

2. If the CWYW is checked, uncheck it and follow the instructions

3. Then repeat step 1, this time, check the CWYW and click on 'Next' until it is completed

4. Open your MS Word application and start a new document. You should see the Endnote21 tab in the ribbon after these steps.
