Elsevier Open Access Agreement

Elsevier and NUS’ Read & Publish Agreement commences from 1 Jan 2023, and allows NUS corresponding authors to publish open access in Elsevier core hybrid journals, without paying any Article Publication Charges (APC) [subject to availability of article allocations each calendar year]. Once the maximum article allowance has been reached, APCs will be eligible for a 10% discount instead.

2024-04: The agreement has reached its maximum article allowance for 2024

Eligible Authors

  • The corresponding author must be affiliated with NUS (i.e. full-time staff)
  • Each NUS author is only eligible for 1 article allocation per calendar year

For articles to be published open access under the terms of this agreement, corresponding author must

  • select NUS as your affiliation in the publisher system
  • use your NUS email (emails ending with @nus.edu.sg; @duke-nus.edu.sg; @comp.nus.edu.sg; @yale-nus.edu.sg) when submitting your article.

Corresponding author should not use personal email addresses (e.g. gmail.com, outlook.com, yahoo.com). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement.

The agreement covers Elsevier’s core hybrid journals.

Search the Elsevier Journal Finder for the list of journals included in this agreement.

Information for Authors

The process of publishing under the agreement is as follows:
  • Step 1: Once the journal accepts your article, you will receive an email containing a link to the “post acceptance author journey”.
  • Step 2: You will be asked to review your affiliation and funder details. Based on this information, you will see personalised publishing options including the option to publish under the agreement.
  • Step 3: You will confirm your publishing choices and complete the post acceptance journey.
  • Step 4: Your institution will validate your eligibility for the agreement
  • Step 5: You and your co-authors will receive an email to confirm that the APC will be covered by the agreement. Please note that the number of APCs included under the agreement is fixed and will be allocated based on date of acceptance.

If your request is denied, you will receive an invoice for the full APC for open access publishing. If you are unwilling or unable to pay for open access, you can contact Elsevier via email to change the publishing option to subscription to publish free of charge within two weeks of Elsevier sending the invoice.
