Citation Styles: Citing AI Tools (NEW!)

This guide contains information & resources on the commonly used citation styles in NUS such as ACS, AMA, APA, ASA, Chicago/Turabian, Harvard, IEEE, Legal style and MLA.

Important Points to Note

Existing citation style guidance varies significantly for citing AI-generated content, since AI tools are still evolving.

For NUS’s Guidelines on AI Use, refer to:

Use this page on citing AI tools according to specific style guides along with the resources above.

Note: If you intend to publish your work, do note that in addition to style guides for citation, you may need to consult publishers' policies for using AI tools or including AI-generated content in writing.

Citation Style Guide – Current Guidelines

  1. APA: How to cite ChatGPT
  2. MLA: How do I cite generative AI in MLA style?
  3. Chicago: Citation, Documentation of Sources
  4. IEEE : There are no formal IEEE style guidelines for citing content produced using generative AI. You may thus try citing this content following the "Unpublished" content type style guidelines (page 16). IEEE requires content generated by AI to be "disclosed in the acknowledgments section of any article submitted to an IEEE publication." (link)

Note about the accuracy of AI tool’s outputs

Verify the accuracy of AI generated content with reliable sources. One way to cross-check is through using a diversity of sources such as academic publications accessible through NUS Libraries.
